Honoring
Each year, the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition honors those who have made distinguished contributions in making Los Angeles County more bicycle-friendly.

State Senator Sheila J. Kuehl - Civic Leadership Award
Senator Kuehl has served the State of California since 1994, first in the State Assembly, and then as Senator for the 23rd disctrict. In 1995, she established the original Pacific Coast Highway Task Force, with the goal of improving conditions and traffic flow on PCH. After the deaths of two cyclists on PCH in 2005, the task force was re-formed and expanded to address safety for cyclists along the popular highway, and accomplishments include new "Share the Road" signage and a planned PSA campaign.

Chris Ziegler - Chuck Witham Memorial Volunteer Award
Chris Ziegler is a longtime LACBC member and a Licensed Cycling Instructor (LCI). Chris has donated innumerable hours of his life to promoting bicycle transportation in Los Angeles County, including bicycle commuting workshops at major employers such as American Apparel, Disney and WalMart. He has also led multi-day traffic cycling safety courses using the League of American Bicyclists (Road 1) training curriculum.

REI - Community Leadership Award
As part of their commitment to outdoor activity and the environment, REI funds hundreds of grants every year to organizations that share these values. They have provided enthusiastic and generous support for LACBC projects over the past few years, including sponsorship of the Los Angeles River Ride and the Bicycle Resource Guide.

Velo Club La Grange - Advocacy Award
One of the largest cycling clubs in the Los Angeles area, Velo Club La Grange is active in recreational cycling, racing and local bike advocacy. In 2005, La Grange joined local law enforcement and other officials on the Pacific Coast Highway Task Force and became an integral voice for improved bicycling conditions along PCH.

Dan Koeppel - Advocacy in Journalism Award
A freelance writer and avid mountain biker, Dan has been published in the New York Times Magazine, Bicycling, Mountain Bike, Outside, Audubon, and National Geographic Adventure. His 2005 Bicycling article "Invisible Riders," which followed an immigrant bicycle commuter, brought attention to an oft-overlooked segment of the bicycling community.

Michelle Mowery - Advocacy in Government Award
As the bicycle coordinator of the City of Los Angeles, Michelle Mowery has worked for over a decade to improve conditions for bicyclists in Los Angeles. Despite being stuck with one of the world's most challenging transportation systems, she has overseen the development of over 300 miles of bikeways, a feat achievable only with Michelle's uncommon combination of passion, technical knowledge, historical understanding, and work ethic.

The Ditty Bops - Roll Model Award
Successful Los Angeles musical duo and avid cyclists the Ditty Bops are know for their pro-bike offerings, such as the 2006 Bicycle Bikini Calendar, featuring the two musicians and an array of beautiful bikes. In their most inspirational bicycle feat yet, the Ditty Bops toured the country by bike this year to promote their latest album, Moon Over the Freeway.

Bicycle Kitchen - Velorution Award
The Bicycle Kitchen was founded in 2002 when a few people started working on their bikes in an unused kitchen in the Los Angeles EcoVillage. Four years later, the nonprofit comprises 40 volunteers and operates six days a week in a Koreatown storefront, where they teach bicycle building and repair to the community.

Joe Linton - Founders Award
A founding member of the LACBC, Joe served on the board of directors until the spring of 2006. Joe's community organizing savvy, vision and leadership were instrumental in bringing LACBC to where it is today. An artist as well as an activist, Joe has published his first book, "Down By The Los Angeles River" (Wilderness Press) and now works for Friends of the Los Angeles River.
