LA Councilman Joe Buscaino's office has been responding to increased criticism for the implementation of bike lanes on Westmont Drive between Western and Gaffey (map here). The Daily Breeze has been covering the story. The latest article summarizes the intensity of folks who want to remove the recently added bike lanes.
In the article there is mention of a protest at the corner of Westmont and Western on Monday, May 20th at 4 p.m. We are asking all local bicyclists and supporters to ride the route with bike lanes at that time in solidarity with Buscaino's vision for a safer and more bike-friendly San Pedro. Can you join? Let alek@la-bike.org know.
Allyson is leading the charge. She will be at the northwestern-most corner of the Albertsons parking lot at Westmont and Western. If you have any trouble finding her call her at 310-567-2345.
Beyond that, I encourage everyone to contact Councilman Buscaino's office to express support for the installation of these bike lanes and their traffic-calming effect. The councilman has been hearing a lot of negative reactions and he needs to hear from bicyclists and those who want to calm traffic and make it safer for all users. BE POSITIVE in your emails, please.

Mulholland Highway to Pedalers Fork
When: Sunday, May 19; Meet at 8:30 A.M.; ride at 9:00 A.M.
Where: Pedalers Fork - 23504 Calabasas Road, Calabasas
We invite you to join us on a tour celebrating Bike Week. We’ll ride along Mulholland Highway, a historic two-lane road running east to west in the Santa Monica Mountains. This is one of L.A.’s great routes, known for its coastal oak woodlands, sandstone formations, creeks, and excellent riding. Along the way, we’ll see the rugged peaks made famous, season after season, in the opening scenes of M*A*S*H on TV. We’ll also ride around Malibou Lake (a scenic 1920s hunting lodge area) and then head up the fabled Rock Store Climb, with its eight switchbacks and stellar views en route. Our return, mostly downhill and flat, takes us down Westlake Road and then along the dividing line between city and open country. We’ll wrap this ride celebrating bicycling in Calabasas with a visit to Pedalers Fork, a newly opened, cyclo-centric eatery and watering hole.
Ride Length: 40 miles
Ride Duration: Approximately 4-5 hours, including stops
Difficulty: Recommended for intermediate-level riders, age 16 and up. The route follows two-lane roads west through the Santa Mountains. There are three moderate, sustained climbs. We return via bike lanes along Agoura Road. Total elevation gain is about 3,000 feet.
Rain policy: Torrential rain, snow, earthquake, or fierce wind cancels the outing. Otherwise, we ride.
What to Bring: A road-worthy bike, extra inner tubes, a patch kit and pump, drinking water, a pocket snack (such as an energy bar, banana or trail mix), a helmet, and money for refueling stops and post-ride refreshments at Pedalers Fork.
Parking: There’s very little parking at Pedalers Fork, so if you drive to the start, please leave your car at the Commons at Calabasas shopping center (at Commons Way and Calabasas Road), then ride a short distance east on Calabasas Road to El Canon Avenue, turn right, then right again into the Pedalers Fork parking lot.

When: Sunday April 14; Meet at 8:30 AM, ride at 9:00 AM
Where: The Trails Cafe - 2333 Fern Dell Drive, Los Angeles (map)
Every spring, around Easter, professional cyclists tackle Paris-Roubaix (pronounced ru-BAY), a race across Northern France. First run in 1896, it’s one of the oldest cycling contests—a true classic. With sections of bumpy cobblestone, country roads, many, many hills, and typically foul weather, Paris-Roubaix is known for making riders suffer, worthy of its term of endearment: “a Sunday in hell” (there’s even a movie about it with that title).
Our version—L.A. Roubaix—is really not hellish at all, and we can realistically hope for great weather, but you can expect to suffer a little. No cobblestones, but the Los Angeles equivalent: rugged, barely paved back roads (don’t worry, they’re not that rough. You can safely navigate them on a road bike). Yup, we’ll climb hills, too—but nothing daunting. Our route will take us into car-free, backcountry areas of Griffith Park. From there, we’ll ride around Silver Lake, through the city’s second-largest park, Elysian Park (way more bucolic than the Champs Elysées), and swing past Echo Park Lake. We’ll finish our loop at The Trails Cafe, where we can dig into well-deserved treats like fresh-squeezed lemonade, great coffee, home-baked quiches, apple pie and cookies, plus amazing avocado sandwiches.
Ride Length: 35 miles.
Ride Duration: Approximately 4-5 hours, including stops.
Difficulty: Recommended for intermediate-level riders, age 16 and up. You should be comfortable riding on rough roads with mostly packed patches of sand and gravel. The total elevation gain is about 2,500 feet. The route also includes city riding on bike lanes and “sharrow”-marked bike routes.
Rain Policy: Torrential rain, snow, earthquake, or fierce wind cancels the outing. Otherwise, we ride.
What to bring: A road-worthy bike, extra inner tubes, a patch kit and pump, drinking water, a pocket snack (such as an energy bar, banana or trail mix), a helmet, and money for refueling stops and post-ride refreshments at The Trails Cafe.
RSVP: Strongly encouraged, via wheretobikela@gmail.com, so we can send you last-minute advisories, particularly about weather.

Monday, April 8, 2013 - 6:00pm - Tuesday, April 30, 2013 - 8:00pm
Councilman Joe Buscaino (CD15) announced this week that he is taking his Public Works Committee on a series of hearings around the City to gather public feedback on his proposal for a $3 billion general obligation bond to reconstruct the 8,700 lane-miles of streets that are in failed or near failed condition. When the idea was first floated in January, LA Walks and LACBC, along with over 20 other advocates and organizations, responded swiftly, calling for any new revenue to be put toward complete streets, not just rebuilding our 20th century infrastructure.
The downtown one of this new series of hearings was last night and LA Walks and LACBC were again represented, reminding Councilmember Buscaino of our recommendations to incorporate complete streets, sidewalks, and multimodal performance measures into the program. Now it's your turn to call for complete streets when the hearings reach your neighborhood. You can read our policy brief or jump straight to some talking points to use at your local hearing.

Members of the media are invited to attend a public outreach event in the continuing search for the driver who hit cyclist Damian Kevitt last month.
Volunteers and community organizers will be distributing fliers to inform the public of the hit-and-run collision and the $25,000 reward being offered for information leading to the arrest of the assailant(s).
Damian was struck on Sunday February 17, 2013 at 11:30AM, the timing and distribution area correlate to the time and location of the hit-and-run one month ago. There is a strong possibility the assailant was playing soccer at or near the field prior to the collision.
When: Sunday, March 24; 10:30 AM Check-In, Public outreach from 10:45 AM-12:00 PM
Where: John Ferraro Athletic Fields, Griffith Park 4701 Zoo Drive, Los Angeles, 91207 (Meet at the Giant Soccer Ball adjacent to the soccer field parking lot)
BACKGROUND: On Sunday February 17, 2013, Damian Kevitt was struck by a light colored minivan, possibly a gray Toyota Sienna which might have had a “for sale” sign posted in the rear window, on Zoo Drive near the Ferraro Soccer Complex and Dog Park. The driver was possibly wearing a soccer jersey.
A $25,000 reward is being offered by the City of Los Angeles and the CHP to find the hit-and-run driver. Anyone with information is asked to call CHP’s Altadena station at (626) 296-8100 or (323) 259-2010
Damian Kevitt was struck on on Feb. 17 around 11:35 a.m. when a minivan made a hard left, that struck and dragged him 600 feet down the Interstate 5 on-ramp until he fell from the vehicle. The violent collision broke 20 bones and crushed his right leg. Doctors had to amputate his right leg below the knee. His left foot is missing tissue and skin and may also need to be amputated the road rash was so severe, it was down to the bone on Kevitt's left elbow, and his buttocks will need skin grafts.

Saturday, March 16, 2013 - 8:30am
When: Saturday, March 16; Meet at 8:30am; ride at 9:00am.
Where: John Anson Ford Park - 8000 Scout Avenue, Bell Gardens (map)
Last month, cyclists on our Touring L.A. County ride experienced the Santa Clara River arroyo as we pedaled up Soledad Canyon to Acton.
Now we’ll explore the county’s three other rivers — the Rio Hondo, the Los Angeles and the San Gabriel — for an entirely different riding experience. Though largely channelized in concrete, this trio of waterways still offers abundant birdlife and re-emerging river greenery. The upside to these engineering interventions is miles and miles of smooth, virtually uninterrupted, car-free bike path atop the river levees.
From John Anson Ford Park, we’ll head down the Rio Hondo to its confluence with the LA River. From there, we’ll continue south a short stretch, crossing Long Beach — past Rosie the Riveter Park and the old Douglas and Boeing aircraft factories — to the San Gabriel River. (This brief foray onto bike lane is the ride’s only segment away from a river’s edge.) From there, we ride north to Whittier Narrows, across the flood control dam, and then, back down the Rio Hondo to the trailhead.
Ride Length: 44 miles
Ride Duration: Approximately 4-5 hours, including stops.
Difficulty: Recommended for intermediate-level riders, age 16 and up. The total elevation gain is about 2,000 feet over the entire ride, but it’s so gradual you’ll think the GPS is fooling you. What goes up must come down — so, on the return, there’s a gradual downhill. The route includes some city riding on bike lanes as we cross Long Beach from one river to the other.
Rain Policy: Torrential rains, snow, earthquake, or fierce wind cancels the outing. Otherwise, we ride.
What to bring: A road-worthy bike, extra inner tubes, a patch kit and pump, drinking water, a pocket snack (such as an energy bar, banana or trail mix), a helmet, and money for refueling stops and post-ride refreshments.
RSVP: Strongly encouraged via wheretobikela@gmail.com, so that we can send you last-minute advisories, particularly about weather.

Where: Via Princessa Metrolink Station - 19201 Via Princessa, Santa Clarita. Meet in Metrolink’s public parking near the train platform (map)
Join us for a tour of the eastern Santa Clarita Valley. We’ll head out on Soledad Canyon Road for several miles of low-traffic riding along rock-strewn arroyos, sagebrush-flecked hillsides and distant, snow-capped mountains. We may even spot a coyote or two. Near our halfway point, we’ll blow through the Old West gold-mining town of Acton, with its 49er Bar and Grill — open since 1889. (Out front, there’s still a “hitching post,” now a bike rack.) Our real destination is Vasquez Rocks, an iconic, canted formation of red and yellow sandstone that has provided the scenic location for countless TV shows and movies, from The Flintstones to Star Trek and Planet of the Apes. More infamously (and in real life), it was the 1870s hideout of the notorious bandito Tiburcio Vasquez, a dashing, guitar-playing, bank-robbing rogue — the classic character of any Western movie. After bidding Señor Vasquez’s rocks adios, we’ll ride back along the Santa Clara River to our trailhead.
Ride Length: 44 miles
Ride Duration: About 4-5 hours, including stops.
Difficulty: Recommended for intermediate-level riders, age 16 and up. The total elevation gain is roughly 2,000 feet over the course of the entire ride, with almost all of the climbing before Vasquez Rocks (mile 24). On the return, there’s a gradual downhill back to Santa Clarita and possible headwinds. The route includes small amount of city riding at the start and finish and through the old gold-mining town of Acton.
Rain Policy: Torrential rains, snow or fierce winds cancels. Otherwise, we ride.
What to bring: A road-worthy bike, extra inner tubes, a patch kit and pump, drinking water, a pocket snack (such as an energy bar, banana or trail mix), a bicycling helmet, and money for refueling stops and post-ride refreshments.
RSVP: Strongly encouraged via wheretobikela@gmail.com, so that we can send you last-minute weather advisories.

Want to see bike lanes on the Westside? Come to tonight's critical Westside Neighborhood Council meeting. Yes, it's on Valentine's Day, but your Valentine will be sure to appreciate having a safe place to ride as much as you do!
LACBC is giving an informational presentation tonight at the Westside Neighborhood Council about the proposed bike lanes on Westwood, Sepulveda, and Avenue of the Stars. This is an important meeting if we want to see lanes on Westwood move forward. The Neighborhood Council has previously gone on the record opposing bike lanes on Westwood without first hearing from people who ride bikes, people like you.
So please, if you are at all able to make it, come to tonight's Westside Neighborhood Council meeting and show your support for bike lanes on Westwood.
When: Thursday, February 14; 7:00 P.M.
Where: Westside Pavilion Meeting Room A (3rd Floor behind food court) - 10800 W. Pico Blvd., 90064 (map)
Bike lane opponents have already put out their call to action. This is yours!
We need all hands on deck to make these lanes happen, so I hope you'll be able to make it. Please let Eric Bruins know if you can attend at eric@la-bike.org.
Wednesday, February 13, 2013 - 6:30pm
Despite our hard work, we are still faced with the uncertainty of getting bike lanes on Lankershim, a critical business and residential corridor that connects people to places by way of 2 subway stops.
Unfortunately, a bad proposal to replace Lankershim with Vineland is circulating and it may come up during the meeting. We find many issues with the Vineland alternative and I hope you can echo these concerns while pushing for Lankershim at Wednesday's meeting. If Vineland does not come up, then no need to bring it up in your comments.
Mid-Town NoHo Neighborhood Council Board Meeting
When: February 13, 6:30 PM (dinner will be provided)
Where: Senior Citizens' Center - 5301 Tujunga Blvd., North Hollywood, 91601
The NHNC is going to make their final decision on supporting or rejecting the proposed bike lane on Lankershim. Because the bike lane would be most heavily used in this district, we think its CRITICAL to get as many people to this meeting as possible. While it may make sense for you to have a bike lane at the cost of a travel lane, many people don't realize the benefits. Please come and help convey our message in support of Lankershim. THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT meeting of the Ride Lankershim campaign.
This meeting can make or break our efforts to make Lankershim a safer street for all users. Can you make it? Please email Alek Bartrsouf if you can attend at at alek@la-bike.org with any questions.
Wednesday, February 13, 2013 - 6:00pm - Thursday, February 21, 2013 - 8:30pm

The Los Angeles City Planning Department recently released the draft Environmental Impact Report (EIR) for the next 5 years of Bike Lane implementation. This plan covers 39.5 miles of bike lanes!
Due to the passage of A.B. 2245 last year by Governor Brown, the EIR process will not be as lengthy as it has been in the past, but the City will instead be relying on public outreach.
That's where you come in. The city needs to hear from you!
If you weren't able to make it to any of the hearings or weren't able to make a public comment, be sure to go on record and email in a letter of support! Please feel free to use our words or your own in asking for more bike lanes. You can also mention specific projects by name that you particularly want to support. (The project maps can be found here: Northeast map and flier, Central map and flier, West map and flier, and Valley map and flier.)
Send in your comments to David Somers at City Planning at david.somers@lacity.org by Monday, March 4th, at 5 PM.
Dear Departments of Transportation and Planning,
As a resident of (insert neighborhood here), I am writing in support of all of the proposed bike lanes under review. The addition of bike lanes will only help increase safety and mobility options for people to visit prime destinations in the area and commute to work. If we can make bike riding a safe, welcoming option, then we can relieve congestion, clean the air, and improve all of our health.
While I understand that these proposed bike lanes may require altering of the usage of a travel lane, the benefits of bicycle lanes outweigh this cost. On many of the streets, the bike lanes will reduce motorists speeding through our community to get to destinations elsewhere. Bike lanes will also help people feel comfortable riding on the street instead of the sidewalk, which is safer for them and safer for pedestrians. Bike lanes are good for my community and give my neighbors and me an option to bypass traffic rather than sit in it.
In the end, these bike lanes will make our community feel safer and have more travel options to help people get around on foot or on two wheels. With adequate infrastructure on our streets, I'd be more willing to ride to work, recreate, and run errands. Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Name
Address
If you would like more talking points on benefits of bike lanes and want to modify this letter, please feel free to look at the summary we have generated here.
You can read more about the draft EIR and the street segments aching for some bike lanes on Los Angeles Streetsblog. Many--Lankershim, Figueroa (and Colorado), Westwood--will be familiar to you through our Neighborhood Bike Ambassador campaigns, but we're sure you'll be excited about other streets. Venice! 7th! Martin Luther King Blvd.! Cesar Chavez! And beyond!
Tuesday, February 12, 2013 - 7:00pm - 9:00pm

Guest Speaker Steve Gaur will present LADOT's plan to install the bike lanes on Wilbur Ave.
When: Tuesday, February 12; 7 – 9 PM
Where: Beckford Avenue Elementary School - 19130 Tulsa Street, Northridge, CA 91326

If you live and are registered to vote in Council District 1 (see map), we hope you'll learn more about the folks running to represent you. In order to get their views on transportation and livable streets, we are co-hosting a candidate forum with Los Angeles Streetsblog, Los Angeles Walks, and Occidental College's Environmental and Urban Policy Program this Sunday. It's Super Bowl Sunday, and what better way to spend it than riding your bike and checking out the Coliseum (host of the first Super Bowl in 1967) and the Rose Bowl (host of 5 Super Bowls)! Will Farmer's Field be built near the LA Convention Center? Will it have bike parking? Which vagabond NFL franchise may end up becoming LA's third NFL team? Who knows? These, and other questions will not be answered on the ride. But we will travel between the two stadiums for a roundtrip total of 35 miles, and faster riders may have time to toss around the pigskin while waiting for others to catch up before departing to Super Bowl viewing parties. Team jerseys encouraged ...even if your team isn't playing in the big game.

The co-authors of Where to Bike Los Angeles lead the first Sunday Funday ride of the New Year, 2013. We’ll explore the Orange Line Bike Path that parallels Metro’s Orange Line Busway from NoHo west across the San Fernando Valley, all the way along the recently completed four-mile long extension from Warner Center in Canoga Park to Chatsworth. We’ll hit a handful of sights along the way: the Great Wall of Los Angeles, the Sepulveda Basin Recreation Area, the Encino Velodrome, the Pierce College Farm Market, and the famous Munch Box snack stop.
When: Sunday January 6, 2013; Meet at 8:30 AM, ride at 9:00 AM
Where: Meet at the Metro Red Line’s North Hollywood Station — 5391 Lankershim Blvd.(at Chandler Blvd). See map. There’s plenty of free parking at the Metro Station, or you can take the Red Line to NoHo.
Ride Length: About 40 miles
Ride duration: Approximately 4 hours (including stops)
Difficulty: Easy to moderate. Beginners are welcome. The Orange Line Bike Path is very flat, free of cars (except at crossings) with only a few small inclines. Weather Policy: Heavy rain cancels or postpones the ride, but with light rain or a drizzle, the ride will go on!
RSVP: To RSVP or volunteer as ride support, please contact Carol Feucht, LACBC Membership & Communications Director, at carol@la-bike.org.
About Sunday Fundays: Sunday Funday Rides are free to LACBC members plus one guest. Interested in becoming a member? Sign up for membership online or become a member at the ride at a discounted price.

LACBC members: Join us for another family ride across Pasadena to Laemmle's Playhouse 7, where we'll climb the rooftop and watch the 124th Rose Parade from up above!
Because we will be climbing very tall ladders on a rooftop with no parapet, riders must be comfortable with tall heights and agile enough to make the climb. This ride, combined with the climbing, is not suitable for children under 9.
When: Tuesday, January 1, 2013; Meet at 7:30 AM, Ride at 7:45 AM
Where: Meet at the Heritage Square Gold Line Station in Highland Park at 3545 Pasadena Ave, Los Angeles 90031 (map)
Ride Length: Roughly 8 miles each way (16 total)
Ride Duration: The ride will be less than one hour, but you'll want to factor in how much time you'll be spending watching the parade after the short ride.
Ride Difficulty: Families, though this ride is not suitable for children under 9 years of age. Because we will also be on a rooftop with no parapet, riders must be comfortable with tall heights and climbing up tall ladders.
What to bring: Water, helmet, snacks, warm layers of clothing and accessories, sunglasses, sunscreen, shoes you can climb ladders in, possibly blankets
RSVP: RSVPS are REQUIRED for this ride, as this ride is limited to only 24 people! Priority will be given to current LACBC members and those who RSVP early. Touring Los Angeles County with LACBC and Where To Bike Los Angeles
Lighthouses: The Palos Verdes Coastline and Historic San Pedro
When: Sunday December 9; Meet at 8:30 AM, Ride at 9:00 AM
Where: Playa del Rey: west end of Convoy St. at Pacific Avenue. (map)
Meet in the public parking lot at the basketball court.
Wide, flat beaches may seem like quintessential LA, but this County’s long stretch of coastline (comprising 10% of California’s oceanfront) is actually far more varied. Our ride takes in a range of coastal experiences. For the first and last 10 miles (the warm-up and wind-down), we’ll coast through beach-cruiser territory, before continuing into the rugged, sea-carved Palos Verdes Peninsula. We’ll pass two remarkably different historic lighthouses en route to the vibrant working port of San Pedro (a spectacle in its own right)
Ride length: 50 miles
Ride duration: About 4-5 hours, including stops.
Ride difficulty: Recommended for intermediate-level riders, age 16 and up. The total elevation gain is roughly 2,000 feet over the course of the ride — no big hills, just rolling terrain between 10 flat miles at the tour’s beginning and end. Much of the journey is on the Marvin Braude Bike Path or bike lanes.
What to Bring: A road-worthy bike, an extra inner tube, a patch kit and pump, drinking water, a pocket snack (such as, an energy bar, banana or trail mix), a bicycle helmet and money for “refueling” stops
and post-ride refreshments at Tanner’s Coffee.
RSVP: Highly recommended, but not absolutely required. To RSVP (or to volunteer as ride support), email Jon and Sarah at wheretobikela@gmail.com.

The addition of bike lanes on Lankershim will accent the people-oriented district this community has become and will ultimately make the area a more vibrant and livable community. Having bike lanes on Cahuenga will also address a gap in connectivity between the Valley and Hollywood communities.
Join us in taking action! One of the events we have planned is the Ride Lankershim bike ride!
Ride Lankershim!
When: December 8; 10:00 AM
Where: Meet at Metropolis Bikes - 4660 Lankershim Blvd., North Hollywood
Join us for a roughly 3.5-mile bike ride along Lankershim (proposed bike lanes), Colfax (existing bike lanes), and the Chandler Bikeway (bike path). We are also doing outreach to promote the proposed bike lanes on Lankershim and Cahuenga. RSVP and share the Facebook event.
For more information about our Ride Lankershim campaign (including links to signing a petition and joining the Ride Lankershim email list), visit la-bike.org/ridelankershim. Touring Los Angeles County with LACBC and Where To Bike Los Angeles
Through the San Gabriel Foothills: River Bikeways and Historic Towns
When: Sunday November 18; Meet at 8:30 AM, ride at 9:00 AM
Where: Classic Coffee - 148 North Glendora Avenue, Glendora, 91741 (Meet in the public parking lot behind Classic Coffee)
This is a bicycle tour in the San Gabriel foothills along the northeastern fringe of surban Los Angeles. Rich in history, variety and natural beauty, the area is home to some of LA County’s earliest small cities: Monrovia (incorporated in 1887), Azusa (1898) and Glendora (1911). Two river bike-path systems — along the San Gabriel and the Rio Hondo — tie together the ride, passing along the Emerald Necklace, an evolving string of pocket parks and greenways. The route also includes the Royal Oaks Bike Trail (a rails-to-trails path on the old Red Line trolley right-of-way) and a foray into Monrovia Canyon Park, with its forest and streams.
Ride Length: 50 miles
Ride Duration: About 4-5 hours, including stops
Difficulty: Recommended for intermediate-level riders, age 16 and up. The total elevation gain is roughly 2,000 feet over the course of the entire ride. The terrain is mostly rolling, with one major climb to Monrovia Canyon Park. Primarily on bike paths, the route begins and ends with some some city street riding through Glendora, Monrovia, and Azusa.
What to Bring: A road-worthy bike, an extra inner tube, a patch kit and pump, drinking water, a pocket snack (such as, an energy bar, banana or trail mix), a bicycling helmet, and money for “refueling” stops and post-ride refreshments at Classic Coffee.
RSVP: Highly recommended, but not absolutely required. To RSVP (or to volunteer as ride support), please email wheretobikela@gmail.com.
About these Rides: Touring Los Angeles County with LACBC and Where To Bike Los Angeles is a series of rides that are free and open to every LACBC member, plus one guest. When: Saturday, November 3; meet at 3:45 PM, ride at 4:15 PM
Where: meet at The Georgian - 1415 Ocean Ave, Santa Monica, 90401 (map)
Our Executive Director Jen Klausner wants to lead a fun and spooky nighttime ride, but she also wants to make sure that you don't sleep through your alarm when you have to get to work the next morning. That's why we're moving our monthly Sunday Funday Ride to the first Saturday this November!
We will be visiting some special haunted destinations including the Marquez Family Cemetery, Sullivan Ridge Fire Road, and the Murphy Ranch. Dirt-worthy bikes are recommended though, especially for one of our most scary destinations. Be aware that there's some climbing and descending required for this route. Please bring front and back lights, as it will get dark. Join us later on for post-ride sustenance at the Basement Tavern at the Victorian at Main and Ocean Park.
Ride Length: about 16 miles
Ride Duration: about 3-4 hours (with stops and on-foot exploration)
Difficulty: For strong, intermediate riders due to climbing; recommended for folks ages 16 and up
What to Bring: your dirt-worthy bike, water, bike locks, front and rear bike lights, helmet, money for food at post-ride gathering
RSVP: To RSVP or volunteer as ride support, please contact Carol Feucht, Membership & Communications Director, at carol@la-bike.org.

It's time for our favorite local holiday, where streets are opened to people and smiles: CicLAvia! LACBC is proud to once again partner with the 4th CicLAvia to grace LA's streets. Here are some resources:
Check Your Bike
Before you hop on your bike and head for the CicLAvia route, LACBC recommends you check your bike to make sure it's in good working condition before the big day. Here are a few things you can do. Read about it on the LACBC blog.
Find a Bike
Don't have a bike? Don't fret. You can walk, roller skate, scooter, segway, jump rope, pogo stick, or just dance during CicLAvia. But if you really want a bike, the first 100 people to sign up can
rent a bike from Bike Nation USA for free. Other local places offering bike rentals: Flying Pigeon, Downtown LA Bikes, and DTLA Bikes.
How to Get to CicLAvia

Monday, January 2, 2012 - 7:30am
For the past year, we've held 11 Sunday Funday rides for all types of riders in varying locations throughout the County, and now we're going to do something slightly different to open up 2012: We're having a Monday Funday Ride! (Don't worry though; the Sunday Funday Rides will resume being on the 1st Sunday of the month in February.) We really wanted to ride the Rose Parade this year, and it turns out that it's on January 2nd (a Monday) this year.
So join us for this family ride that will travel roughly 7 miles across Pasadena to the Laemmle Theatre Playhouse, where we'll climb the rooftop and watch the 123rd Rose Parade from up above!
Because we will be climbing very tall ladders on a rooftop with no parapet, riders must be comfortable with tall heights and agile enough to make the climb. This ride, combined with the climbing, is not suitable for children under 9.
When: Monday, January 2, 2012; Meet at 7:00 AM, Ride at 7:30 AM
Where: Hahamongna Watershed Park - Oak Grove Drive and Foothill Boulevard, La Cañada Flintridge (The parking lot is located in the park. Enter at the intersection of Oak Grove Drive & Foothill Blvd. The road will immediately turn to the right. At the first intersection, turn left and follow the road down to the parking lot. We will meet there.)
Ride Length: Roughly 7 miles each way (14 total)
Ride Duration: The ride will be less than one hour, but you'll want to factor in how much time you'll be spending watching the parade after the short ride.
Ride Difficulty: Families, though this ride is not suitable for children under 9 years of age. Because we will also be on a rooftop with no parapet, riders must be comfortable with tall heights and climbing up tall ladders.
What to bring: Water, helmet, warm layers of clothing and accessories, sunglasses, sunscreen, shoes you can climb ladders in, possibly blankets
RSVP: RSVPS are REQUIRED for this ride, as this ride is limited to only 24 people! Priority will be given to current LACBC members and those who RSVP early. Please RSVP with your name, the amount of people you'll be bringing (plus the ages of any children attending), and your phone number to Carol Feucht at carol@la-bike.org.
About Sunday Fundays: Sunday Funday Rides are free and open to LACBC members plus one guest. Interested in becoming a member? Sign up for membership online or become a member at the ride at a discounted price.

Saturday, September 17, 2011 - 11:00am - 1:00pm
This September, LACBC will be conducting the 2nd ever City of LA Bike Count. In 2009 we counted over 14,000 cyclists at 50 intersections throughout the City of LA. It's time to get back out there and do it again! We'll compare this year's counts to 2009 and see if there is an increase or change in cycling in the city. The more data we have on where and how people are riding, the better we can advocate for the bike lanes, bike boulevards, and cycle tracks we need.
Volunteer for the LA Bike Count! We need an army of volunteers to make this happen. The following shifts are available for over 50 locations:
- Tuesday, September 13th: 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM
- Tuesday, September 13th: 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM
- Saturday, September 17th: 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM
If you're interested in volunteering, please click here to sign up or contact Martin Lopez-Iu at martin@la-bike.org. We'll have several volunteer orientation trainings throughout the city before the count.
You can learn more about bike counts and our 2009 City of LA Bike Count here.

Saturday, July 16, 2011 - 10:30am - Sunday, July 17, 2011 - 9:00pm

Those of you with your ears to the ground and your feet on your pedals have no doubt heard and smirked at the notion of Carmegeddon. Well, it’s REALLY COMING! Yes, the closure of a few silly miles of the little ‘ole 405 Freeway is (for some) evidently a potential disaster of proportions biblical. Angelinos have been advised by trembling members of the press, elected officials, et al, to “Stay home or get out of town!” The less trembling have suggested to at least steer clear of the Westside.
However, we at LACBC cry phooey, as we know of something FUN FUN FUN that’s happening outdoors and on the Westside and we know you, you reading this blog are fearless, free, and a seeker of adventure…a BICYCLIST. That is why you will wish to join us on a FREE guided ride with LACBC to the Eat Real Festival at the Historic Helms Bakery District in Culver City. We’ll meet at 10:30 AM Saturday the 16th as well as Sunday the 17th (and ride promptly at 11AM) at the corner of Wilshire and Western, which is also the end of the Purple line. The demi-gods at Metro have made your Metro Purple, Red, and Orange Line rides, as well as select bus rides, free on Carmegeddon weekend.
Upon arrival at the festival, avenging angels (aka bike valets) from the Culver City Bicycle Coalition will park your bike and watch it while you indulge and imbibe wantonly! (Angels wanted…contact Martin Lopez-Iu at martin@la-bike.org. Angels receive free food, drink and t-shirts from Eat Real). There will be a raffle and other angels from Bikerowave will be on hand to do light repairs.
The Eat Real festival is a celebration of all things tasty, fresh and handmade with a focus on street food, local wines, handcrafted beers and traditional craft food – all featuring sustainable, local ingredients. Plus, no dish or drink costs more than $5.
EAT IT: You’ll find tacos inspired by flavors from around the world, curry, BBQ, hot dogs, ice cream, noodles, and a whole lot more of LA’s awesome curbside eats.
MAKE IT: Also at the festival, learn to make your own cheese and other awesome demos.
GROW IT: Yes you can become an urban-agrarian! Explore a DIY lifestyle with demos and activities filled with “ooohs, aaahs and ah-HA’s!”
Or just grab a taco and a beer and enjoy our full schedule of entertainment with bands, butchery contests, lit fest, and other tasty tidbits. Learn more about the Eat Real Festival at www.eatrealfest.com. July 16th & 17th. 10:30 AM to 9 PM. Helms Bakery District.
Sunday, July 3, 2011 - 9:30am

When: Sunday, July 3; Meet at 9:30 AM, Ride at 10:00 AM
Where: Meet at the fountain outside Father's Office - 3229 Helms Avenue, 90034 (between Venice and Washington; see map)
When in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for an Angeleno to spend a Sunday morning exploring our fair city by bike, better connecting themselves with the community, and freeing themselves from the tyranny of the automobile. For this reason, LACBC has established Sunday Funday rides on the first Sunday of each month. We, the LACBC, hold these truths to be self evident. That cyclists are entitled to a fair and equal share of the road. That riding together with other cyclists on a Sunday morning is a great way to assert this right. That mulitas and tacos made from fresh corn tortillas at La Taquiza are that much more delicious after earning them on a short ride. And finally, that a beer at Father's Office at the end of a ride is essentially calorie-free.
Read on for more information. . .
So join us for the next Sunday Funday ride, led by LACBC Board Member Greg Laemmle! On the day before Independence Day, help us honor our Founding Fathers and three first Presidents with a ride on Washington, Adams, and Jefferson Boulevards. We will start out at the Helms Bakery District, ride through the historic neighborhood of West Adams, check out the old tombstones at Angelus Rosedale Cemetery, grab a bite at La Taquiza near USC, and see the route of the new Expo Line on our return leg.

Getting there: Do not park at Helms! Street parking is available nearby, but check signs carefully. Only 2 hours allowed on Venice on South side of street. Unlimited parking on North side of street on Sunday.
You can also park on Regent Street between Hutchinson Avenue and Ivy Street, just a block or so from meeting location. The Helms Bakery District is also accessible by the 733 bus (Venice & National) and 33 bus (Venice & Helms).
Ride length: 20 miles, roughly 4 hours (includes time for lunch and stops)
Ride difficulty: Easy, for riders of all ages and skill levels, moderately paced, few hills, city riding, but much of it within bike lanes
What to bring: Helmet, water, money (for lunch), bike lock (if you have one; if not, we'll share), sunscreen.
Weather Policy: It's the middle of summer so it most likely won't rain. However, it might be hot, though, so bring water and sunscreen.
Ride Support: We're looking for a reliable caboose and one or two people to ride in the middle of the pack. Pump, patch kit, tire tools and extra tubes welcome.
RSVP: To RSVP or volunteer as ride support, please contact Carol Feucht, Membership Manager, at carol@la-bike.org.
About Sunday Fundays: Sunday Funday Rides are free and open to LACBC members plus one guest. Interested in becoming a member? Sign up for membership online or become a member at the ride at a discounted price.
