Join Us at Metro’s Active Transportation Summit on March 1st

On Tuesday, March 1st, Metro will be hosting an Active Transportation Summit, coinciding with the expected release of their draft Active Transportation Strategic Plan. Anyone interested in countywide plans for biking, walking, and safe routes to school should attend to hear what the agency has planned to make our county a healthy, safe, and fun place to bike and walk.

The Active Transportation Strategic Plan is Metro’s plan for planning, funding, and delivering biking and walking projects and programs throughout Los Angeles County over the next several decades. Last month, we got a preview when Metro released their needs assessment, which anticipates between $11.0 and $29.5 billion in funding need over 20 years to make our county a safe and convenient place for biking and walking. This plan fills in more details of that projected expenditure target: which projects are most important, which agencies need to take the lead on implementation, and what leadership does Metro need to provide to make sure improvements are delivered effectively and equitably across the county. We expect there to be some high-profile initiatives, including completing the Los Angeles River bike path and building out first/last-mile access to transit and all major rail and bus stations, but the nuts-and-bolts of the plan are likely to be about funding and coordination among regional agencies and Los Angeles County’s 89 local jurisdictions.

Next Tuesday, Metro has an informative day planned to share the Active Transportation Strategic Plan and begin the countywide conversations among agency partners needed to make the plan a reality. Be sure to come by the LACBC table to say hello!
