Dear Cycling Enthusiasts - If the following motion is passed by the Los Angeles Unified School District board members on Tuesday, Sept 13th, over 1,000 schools sites and district offices will be forced to accommodate bicycles at their locations. LAUSD serves 1 million children and adult students with about 150,000 employees commuting 5 days a week. In one fell swoop, 26 cities including Los Angeles and a portion of the county will take a leap forward in making SoCal a better place for cyclists.
Board Member David Tokofsky is sponsoring the motion but we need four votes to get it passed. Under the "if we build it they will come" theory, we can affect future generations of cyclist simply by making sure they are welcome when they arrive at school.

THE MOTION:
Accommodating Bicycle Use
Throughout LAUSD
Whereas, the Los Angeles Unified School District seeks to encourage healthy behavior by students and employees alike and multiple studies have shown that regular exercise is of tremendous benefit to the body, soul and mind and that healthy employees result in reduced medical costs; and
Whereas, the cost of a gallon of gas is now over three dollars and 77.7% of our students are considered to be "low-income"; and
Whereas, the use of automobiles depletes non-renewable resources, pollutes our air causing asthma in our children, fills our streets with traffic, and causes the District to spend millions of dollars to create parking spaces; and
Whereas, LAUSD should promote cycling as a viable means of transportation to schools and offices; and
Whereas, the district has done an admirable job of constructing new schools thereby making attendance at a neighborhood school probable and a commute by bicycle realistic for most children; and
Whereas, in the construction of new school buildings the district gains Collaborative High Performance Schools points by including bicycle racks; and
Whereas, our older facilities and schools are least likely to have adequate parking and are equally deserving of access by cyclists; and
Whereas, many cities require that bike lockers, showers, and rebates be made available to those who cycle for transportation; and
Whereas, the District Headquarters at 333 S. Beaudry Ave. does not have public bicycle racks available forcing cyclists to lock their bikes haphazardly to handrails and parking meters creating pedestrian hazards; and
Now Therefore Be It Resolved, that the Los Angeles Unified School District requests that Morlin Management work with the City of Los Angeles to establish public bicycle lock-ups to serve our constituents, employees and students and the many bike messengers that frequent the building; and
Be It Further Resolved, that all schools must similarly develop appropriate means of securing the bicycles of their employees and students.
