Sea to the Towers Sunday Funday Ride with LA-Area Bike Clubs
This month, we're going to join forces with some of our local bike clubs (including LA Wheelmen and Beach Cities Cycling Club) to ride to the Watts Towers! Organized by LACBC and LA Wheelmen member David Nakai, this ride will actually have three different rides for various abilities. If you meet up at Dock 52 in Marina del Rey at 8:00 AM, you will be able to choose a medium and moderately flat 37-mile ride and the LA Wheelmen's 49-mile hilly challenge ride through the Baldwin Hills (mileages are round-trip). These groups of riders will then converge with the a third group of riders meeting at Jesse Owens Park at 10 AM to bike 5 miles to the end (10 miles round-trip).
All rides will reach the Watts Towers, where you'll get the chance to take a tour if you choose (bring $7 for the tour if you're interested). Constructed by Simon Rodia over the span of 33 years, the Watts Towers is a National Historic Landmark that features 17 structures embedded with glass, tile, and porcelain. Other sites along the way of the longer rides include the Great Western Forum, Hollywood Park, Major Taylor Bicycle Route, and Ballona Creek Bike Trail.
So come join us and learn more about LACBC, your local bike clubs, and the LA region on this ride!

Glendale City Council approved a proposed road diet test case for Honolulu Ave. in north Glendale/Montrose at their regular meeting last Tuesday night. Following a staff presentation that offered seven different street options for a pilot road diet, Walk Bike Glendale and other community members spoke in favor of a road diet in general, and advocated for Honolulu Ave. specifically. City staff will now move forward on design of the road diet which will include buffered bike lanes that will go from the western entrance of the Montrose Shopping Park to Ramsdell Ave. (or as far west as the City’s budget will allow). Once installed, the City will study the corridor for 12 months and then decide if they will make the road diet permanent. This project is viewed as a test case for potential road diet locations in the future. Community outreach for the approved project is expected in the coming months and you can get involved by contacting Walk Bike Glendale.
February will bring additional bike lane mileage to the growing Downtown LA bike network. New bike lanes will be installed on Main Street from 9th Street to 16th/Venice Blvd linking to the buffered green lane on Spring Street and a future bike lane on Main Street headed north from 9th to Cesar Chavez. LADOT crews are scheduled to being work the weekend of February 11th and will wrap up the weekend of the 18th. If you live or work in DTLA you may see work crews out the week before grinding off existing lane markings in preparation for installation.
Also this month, LADOT crews will be testing various green paint & cement coloring materials on three blocks of Spring Street. On Sunday February 12th crews will be testing a shot-blasting treatment that scars the concrete surface and is supposed to make it easier to bond paint or thermoplastic. They will also test a couple of different concrete stains, paints and thermoplastics, both for the asphalt and concrete surfaces. The three blocks these treatments will be tested are Aliso to Temple; 5th to 6th; and 6th to 7th. If you live or work in DTLA access to driveways/garages on the westside of Spring St. for those three blocks will be restricted between 1AM-4PM on Sunday, Febraury 12th. Plan ahead - consider moving your car to another street or lot in advance if you know you will need to use your car on this day.
And remember to be kind to the crews who are working hard to test out the best materials to make sure the buffered bike lane looks great! Avoid the coned-off areas so you don't run over fresh paint. More details here and here.

The Glendale City Council is expected to choose a street for a pilot road diet at the regular City Council meeting tonight at 6 pm in City Hall Council Chambers. City Staff presented a proposal for La Crescenta in December and was asked to come back with more streets as possible candidates.
After a review of the proposed streets in a staff report, Walk Bike Glendale and the LACBC are supporting a pilot road diet on Honolulu Ave., just west of the Montrose Shopping Park. Walk Bike Glendale and LACBC are encouraging supporters of a pilot road diet to attend tonight’s meeting and voice your support or send an e-mail to City Council by 5 pm today. The meeting agenda and details can be found here.
The help inform the street selection, we’ve compiled crash data for all the proposed road segments plus a section of Verdugo between Glendale Community College and the La Crescenta split as well as Bike and Pedestrian Count data for intersections relevant to the potential streets for a road diet. The crash data includes all reported injury crashes from 2005 through 2009 and the bike/ped count data is from counts conducted in 2009 and 2010. The full bike and ped count reports are available here.
