Stuff goodie bags and then stuff your face with delicious pizza!
Pre-Registration Packet Pick-up Staffing at REI:
When: Saturday May 29th 9am-3pm Where: Arcadia REI or Manhattan Beach REI
When: Sunday May 30th 9am-3pm Where: Northridge REI or Santa Monica REI Who/What: 5 people at each store to distribute bibs to participants who have pre-registered for the ride as well as to register walk-in River Ride sign ups and LACBC memberships. (A great job for Super Volunteers who have trained on tabling)
When: Saturday, June 5th, 8:00am - Los Angeles/Griffith Park sections; 10:00am - Long Beach/Seal Beach sections. Where: Meeting locations: LA River Center (Los Angeles); Bixby Park (Long Beach). Who/What: Captain Colin Bogart - 20 to 25 volunteers to affix signs and color coded stickers marking the 6 different routes. Downtown area and Long Beach/Seal Beach street route volunteers can mark route via bike or car although most volunteers opt to use bicycles. Bikes are required to mark the route along the LA River path and Long Beach path. The Long Beach/Seal Beach marking can be done by volunteers who live in that area.
Pit Stop Check & Porta-Potty Lock:
When: Friday June 4th and/or Saturday June 5th Where: Griffith Park and all pit-stops TBA Who/What: 1 to 3 people, Quick check and padlock of all the pit stops insuring that they are in shape and ready for us. Toilets are dropped off at the pit stops the Friday before the event. Keys to the padlocks must be given to pit-captains. Volunteers for this job must coordinate with the Pit Captains.
When: Week before the ride TBD Where: LACBC headquarters, 634 S. Spring St., downtown Los Angeles, 90014 Who/What: Captain JJ will direct 3 or more volunteers with trucks in exactly what is needed on this first of many loadings/unloadings in preparation for LA River Ride!
Beer Pick Up:
When: Thursday, June 3rd (subject to change) Where: Pick up to be determined by New Belgium Beer and delivered to LACBC headquarters, 634 S. Spring St., downtown Los Angeles, 90014 Who/What: We need a volunteer with a truck to do a fun beer run with Captain JJ! (if available), pick up ten cases of bubblin' brew and deliver it to HQ.
Truck Loading/Unloading to Pitstops Part 2:
When: Friday, June 4th Morning. Where: At designated Fruit Vendor in Downtown LA with a stop at LACBC headquarters, 634 S. Spring St., downtown Los Angeles, 90014
Who/What: We need 3 volunteer drivers with trucks or other such vehicle to drop off fruit and other pit stop materials to the pit captains or pit locations.
Truck Loading/Unloading Part 3:
When: Friday, June 4th Afternoon Where: LACBC headquarters, 634 S. Spring St., downtown Los Angeles, 90014
Who/What: Captain JJ will direct 3 truck drivers and 5 strong volunteers in loading registration materials, t-shirts, goodie bags, cones, etc and bringing the truck to the event (Autry National Center) on the morning of Saturday June 5th.
Final Destination Truck Loading/Unloading:
When: Saturday, June 5th 9am-1pm Where: AUTRY NATIONAL CENTER, Griffith Park Who/What: Captain JJ Hoffman, 3-4 people needed to assist in loading fruit and any other pit stop materials (banners, water, signs, etc) and distributing it and unloading the truck, and setting up the registration area.
Who/What: 4 to 6 volunteers to check the route at 5am on the day of the ride.
Volunteers take different sections of the route to look for hazards that may require a detour. The route checkers must carry a cell phone, a contact sheet, and repair kit to fix or replace missing signage. Major hazards on the route need to be reported to Colin Bogart to arrange detours. All volunteers will call in at the end of their respective route checks to confirm the route is okay.
Long Beach to Seal Beach Loop (1 volunteer by bike, 1 volunteer by bike or car)
Vernon bike path south to Long beach pit stop (1 volunteer by bicycle)
Riverside and Figueroa south through downtown to path entrance in Vernon (1 volunteer by bicycle or car)
Griffith Park loop to Riverside Dr & Figueroa (1 volunteer for the bike path and 1 volunter for streets)
Who/What: Volunteers to stand at the entrance and direct participants to free parking located in the park. There are Zoo and Autry Museum parking lots which are restricted parking only and not allowed for River Ride participants. We need a total of 10-12 volunteers to fill two shifts from 5am-9am and 9am-12noon.
Who/What: Volunteer should be great with kids. Need to set-up a course in the parking lot with cones and sidewalk chalk. One or two extra volunteers should make sure area is coned off before anyone arrives so no one will park there. Clown or other entertainer who works with children preferred.
Registration: 6:00am-11:00am Griffith Park River Ride location
Who/What: 10 adults plus 20 kids to man registration. Volunteers should be cheerful and level headed. One outgoing crew to approach and welcome riders and direct them to the appropriate tents for pre-registered riders and day of ride registrants. Other volunteers to occupy the Registration Tables to sign in riders, take payments, and hand out bibs, etc.,
Who/What: One or two strong person(s) to show off their muscles making sure the 5 gallon water containers always have enough water in them. When empty, they need to be refilled the onsite tap and carried a few feet to the water station at the Autry Center. Two shifts to fill throughout the day.
Who/What: 3 commanding and funny volunteers to keep everyone in line before the ride begins. This can also be doubled up with caboose and/or registration.
Must be experienced riders and able to do quick minor repairs on bikes. Must have cell phones.
Who/What: Last riders, close the ride, 3-5 people who are experienced riders and know how to do small repairs. We need caboose riders for all mileages 1 caboose rider rides the path and informs pit stop volunteers that the ride is over and they can clean up the pit stop 2 caboose riders follow behind that caboose and when a caboose rider sees a slow rider, he must inform that person that he is the last rider.
Who/What: 5 riders to remove signs behind the caboose rider. Volunteers may use a vehicle (SAG drivers can double up) but some sign removal must be done on the path. It would be helpful if this job was doubled up by those who put signs out so they know exactly where they are. A bike with paneer bags or an extracycle is preferable to getting this job done. Working in conjunction with a SAG vehicle is the most expedient way to get this job done.
Who/What: 4-5 people in cars with water and room enough to put bikes on or in their car along with tired or injured riders. Must have cell phones.
Who/What: Each pit stop needs a captain and approximately 5 volunteers manning it. Volunteers hand out food and water, make sure the pit stop remains clean, putting recycling in separate containers. At least one volunteer per pit stop has a car to run to the store for food, water or toilet paper if necessary.
Who/What: 20 high school kids to welcome the riders home and help with clean up. Tear down tents, tables and chairs, picking up garbage/recycling. Load the truck with all the leftover shirts, bags, pop up tents, etc.
Who/What: 2-3 food volunteers work early morning set up, cutting fruit and managing it for the participants. Raffle V will assist the MC keeping control over the prizes and dispensing them. This job could be doubled up by a registration volunteer and or staff member.
UNLOADING THE TRUCK:
Who/What: Four strong volunteers to help unload the truck AFTER the ride is over around 6pm and has been loaded at the park. The unloading will probably take place at JJ's apartment, unless a more suitable location is found. Refreshments will be provided.
