Verdugo Mountains Fire Roads Sunday Funday Ride

November 21, 2013
event
Sunday, December 1, 2013 - 9:30am

Led by LACBC board member Scott Moore, this ride will take us on surface streets to fire roads through the Verdugo Mountains with, weather permitting, views of the Crescenta Valley, San Fernando Valley, Los Angeles, Palos Verdes and Catalina. The ride is approximately 16.5 miles long and will have an elevation gain of 2,577 feet, with most of the climbing on trails.  The ride is approximately 50% trails.

When: Sunday, December 1; meet at 9:30 a.m., ride at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf - 3701 Ocean View Blvd. (corner of Honolulu Ave. and Ocean View Blvd.), in Montrose (north Glendale)

Ride Route: Counterclockwise loop, starting at Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, descend south on Ocean View; continue south on Verdugo Rd.; south on La Crescenta Ave.; south on Canada; turn right (west) on Colina Dr. and climb Sunshine Dr. to Los Flores trailhead; ride across the Verdugo Mountains (Los Flores, Verdugo and Hostetter fire roads) and descend to La Tuna Canyon Road; east on Honolulu to Coffee Bean
Ride Mileage: approximately 16.5 miles
Ride Duration: 2.5-3 hours
Difficulty: Difficult; lots of climbing including a very steep section of paved road; lots of climbing on fire roads, lots of descending on fire roads and paved roads; no water or facilities will be available during most of the ride. The fire roads require good fitness but few technical skills.  The fire roads, however, may be rutted and sandy in places so some mountain bike skills are required.

What to Bring: Sufficient water for a three hour ride; depending on the weather, it could be warm or cold and windy; temperatures could change quickly because of altitude and exposed fire roads.  A mountain bike will be well suited for the ride.  A gravel bike with very low gears would also be a good choice.  A road bike would be inappropriate for this ride.
Weather Policy: Heavy rain cancels or postpones the ride, but with light rain or a drizzle, the ride will go on!
